Root Canal Therapy

ROOT CANAL THERAPY IN KANATA

Root canal therapy is a common procedure at Palladium Dental. Typically, root canal therapy requires one visit to complete, but can involve more appointments depending on the complexity of the case. You should expect to experience little or no discomfort during this procedure – contrary to popular belief. With proper care, the restored tooth should also last as long as its healthy original!

SO, WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?

Root canals are tiny passageways coming from the top of the tooth that course their way vertically downward to the tip of the root. Each tooth typically has between one and four root canals.

Many tooth problems involve infections that spread to the inner chamber of the tooth. This is where delicate blood vessels, nerves and other tissues are found. As an infection gets worse, it can begin to affect the roots and cause a lot of pain. A traumatic injury to a tooth can also lead to similar problems. Pain and sensitivity are some of the first indications of a problem; but inside the tooth, a spreading infection can cause small pockets of pus to develop, leading to an abscess. If you’re living in Ottawa or Gatineau and experience these symptoms, it is important that you contact us as soon as symptoms appear.

Fortunately for sufferers, root canal therapy is a remarkable treatment with a very high rate of success. Therapy involves removing the affected nerve tissue, stopping the spread of infection and restoring the healthy portion of the tooth with a crown.

PROCEDURE

The procedure is initiated by your dentist accessing the inner chamber of the tooth through a small pilot hole at the top of the tooth. The dentist will remove infected/diseased tissue, cleanse and disinfect the inner chamber and reshape the tiny canals inside. An inert, elastic filling material then fills and seals the cleansed chamber and canals.
